2012 Meeting Time and Location

The Springfield Chapter of the Missouri Mycological Society is changing our meeting time and location for 2012. We will now meet the first Thursday every other month, beginning in March (March 1st). The new location is in the auditorium at the Springfield Conservation Nature Center. Meeting time is 7:00 pm. Because of our “Winter Dinner” on January 19th, there will be no meeting on Jan 5th. An invitation will be emailed soon for details regarding the ‘Winter Dinner’. Happy New Year!

Next Meeting Nov 2nd at 7:00

The next, and final meeting of the year, is Wednesday, Nov 2nd, 7:00 p.m. at The Library Center. The presentation will be about lichen. As always bring pictures, specimen or stories. See you there!

Foray

Saturday’s foray and potluck was, as always, a fun time. Although not many species were found, compared to the normal amounts found this time of year, we still managed to find some interesting specimens. Among those found were Hericium coralloides, Mycena leaiana, Macrolepiota procera, Fistulina hepatica, Lycoperdon perlatum, and a few others . Sadly, no Grifola frondosa :) We shared great food during the pot luck lunch and Richard demonstrated how to throw the atlatl. Hopefully, we can squeeze in another foray or two before the season is over.

Next Meeting Sept 7th at 7:00

Please join us for our next meeting. The meeting will be held as always at The Library Center meeting room B, Sept. 7th at 7:00pm. I will be giving the presentation which will be about growing Pleurotus species (Oyster Mushrooms). You won’t want to miss the “shy guy” nervously stutter his way through a presentation. It is sure to be entertaining. Bring in your mushrooms to ID, pictures, stories and yourselves! See you there!

Next Meeting – July 6

Just a reminder that the next meeting is July 6th, 7:00pm at The Library Center. Bring your photos and stories of your finds. Unfortunately, the lichen presentation scheduled for this meeting will be postponed until the November meeting. We will be showing the video “The Good, the Bad, and the Deadly” by Taylor Lockwood. See you there!

First Foray

Yesterday we had our first foray. Despite not finding many morels, I think the day was a success. We had nearly every member out there, and everyone so enthusiastic to learn more about fungi! We have such a wonderful and friendly group! I love how many different interests there are; photography, fungi permiculture, identification, cultivation. Everyone has a special interest that helps make our group more diverse. It was really great to get to know some of you better and I really had a wonderful time! Thank you all for coming!

We had a bit of media coverage at the foray. You can read the full News-Leader article here:

Morel Time

There are reports starting to come in on various website forums from all around the state. It’s time to start going out there and looking for Morels! Look near dead or dying elm, ash, tulip poplar, cottonwood, and sycamore. I have been hearing number of early finds near sycamore trees in SW Missouri. Please add a comment on this page if you find morels or tips you would like to share. Read more of this post

Poisonous Mushrooms Class

The first of four annual mushroom identification classes was held Saturday in the beautiful Dr. Edmund A. Babler’s Memorial State Park near St. Louis Missouri. The lecture featured 10 poisonous mushrooms of Missouri as well as 3 mushrooms not found in Missouri. As always, Maxine Stone gave a wonderful and informative presentation. Following the presentation was a short mushroom foray. It was a little to early for morels, but many other mushrooms were found. See the event calendar on the parent chapter website for upcoming classes and events. I encourage everyone to attend.
